10-9, Messenger Appreciation Day

Lane Sony Handycam Chicago 2001

10-9 Messenger Appreciation Day was a couple days ago and I'm reminiscing a helluva lot about my experiences as a bike messenger in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco (early '01-'08), some of the most transformative and life-affirming days of my life thus far. I still have an occasional dream of that frenetic period and wake up energized.

While I'm appreciative to have known the job with open radios and pre-9/11 freedoms, and thankful that the messenger occupation ended my crushing migraines, most important to me is its nosedive introduction to a community of incredible people, weirdos, and friends, many still close, some dead (RIP Illia). While the job is physically punishing and sometimes terrifying, every minute's totally worth the invaluable kinship and shared experiences with you all.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
